In the video “Revolution in the Classroom and in Social Lives,” students are shown visiting websites like MySpace and Facebook where they can accumulate friends and write messages/comments to them. However, in some instances, these messages can materialize into conflict between students. In an example shown in the video clip, students at Chatham High School began a fight that began over a few petty comments on one of these social network sites.

This has now coalesced as a means to bully one’s peers online. Because they feel comfortable at home, students tend to say what they want and ignore future consequences. Furthermore, because of these online fights, they turn into actual fighting at school and can even be posted on Youtube.

In three to four paragraphs, explain the following: Should teachers and administrators have a say at what students put on these sites? How much input should they be allowed over a student’s profile–which is, afterall, an extenion of their personality?

Question from Rama Ramaswami’s Article

Rama Ramaswami’s article “The Prose (and a Few Cons, Too) of Blogging” gives the reader feedback of blogging, how it helps and how it may not be effective. Principal Chris Lehmann states that “’just because they [students] understand Facebook doesn’t mean they understand how to be a better student of English,” (21) and, therefore, teachers should use technology to integrate the new era with older ways of thinking.

Studies show that blogs may “improve students’ writing skills by making them write more frequently and comment on one another’s work” (21). However, asking questions that one would pull out of a textbook or a worksheet is not the best way to incorporate blogging into the classroom. Teachers must find a way to make the technology fun and challenging for their students.

This begs the question: How can blogging be effective in the classroom. Take some time and ponder how you, as a teacher, would use blogging in the classroom that would engage students, but also make it challenging according to your subject area. How would you incorporate other subjects? Like Bud Hunt, an educator, states, “’students should think and write about what they learn across all subjects and grade levels’” (25). How would you incorporate different subject matters with yours in blogging?
